Solar Return

The solar return is a chart for the moment when the Sun returns to its exact natal longitude. Due to leap years, this moment does not fall exactly on the birthday but shifts within approximately 24 hours, so the date and time are calculated rather than taken from the calendar.

The chart describes the year from one birthday to the next. This is the basic tool for a yearly forecast in the European tradition.

Location Building and Relocation

The solar return is calculated for the city where the person is actually located when the Sun returns. The planetary positions do not change, but the angles and houses are completely different, as they define the structure of the year.

This is where the practice of deliberately traveling on your birthday comes from. It should be approached with caution: relocating changes the chart, but does not cancel the natal chart and transits, so there is no reason to expect a complete change of the year from moving.

Birth Chart Analysis

Next, we overlay the solar return chart onto the natal chart. A solar return planet falling on a natal angle or natal luminary highlights the most prominent theme. Without this overlay, the reading remains abstract.

Solar and Profections

Practical technique: find the profectional ruler of the year and check its position in the solar return chart. If it is near an angle and in dignity, the year unfolds actively and favorably in that area.

Limitations

The Solar chart does not show what is not present in the natal chart. If a theme is not embedded in the natal chart, the annual chart will not create it; it only highlights existing elements.

Forecast based solely on a solar return is unreliable. Transits of slow planets and directions can override the annual chart, especially in years of major Saturn or Uranus shifts.
