☀️ Solar Return

The solar return chart captures the exact moment each year when the transiting Sun returns to its natal position - a key tool for annual forecasting.

Overview

The solar return (solyar) chart is cast for the precise moment the Sun reaches your natal Sun's longitude each year: - Calculated to arcsecond precision using Swiss Ephemeris - Cast for birth location or current residence - Full chart wheel with houses, aspects, and planetary positions - Compare solar return chart with natal chart - House overlays show which natal houses are activated - Navigate between years to compare annual patterns - Export solar return reports to PDF or DOCX - Interpretation texts for solar return placements

Solar Return

The solar return is a chart for the moment when the Sun returns to its exact natal longitude. Due to leap years, this moment does not fall exactly on the birthday but shifts within approximately 24 hours, so the date and time are calculated rather than taken from the calendar.

The chart describes the year from one birthday to the next. This is the basic tool for a yearly forecast in the European tradition.

  • Tropical year 365.2422 days, so the return moment shifts.
  • Solar return may occur one day before or after the birthday.
  • Return period from return to next return

Location Building and Relocation

The solar return is calculated for the city where the person is actually located when the Sun returns. The planetary positions do not change, but the angles and houses are completely different, as they define the structure of the year.

This is where the practice of deliberately traveling on your birthday comes from. It should be approached with caution: relocating changes the chart, but does not cancel the natal chart and transits, so there is no reason to expect a complete change of the year from moving.

  • Angles and houses depend on location, planets do not.
  • Solar relocation changes the chart structure, but not the natal.
  • Check the version of the chart for the past years.

Birth Chart Analysis

First, examine the Ascendant of the solar return and its ruler, then the house where the Sun is located, and finally the strongest planet near the angles. These three steps form the framework of the year.

Next, we overlay the solar return chart onto the natal chart. A solar return planet falling on a natal angle or natal luminary highlights the most prominent theme. Without this overlay, the reading remains abstract.

  • Ascendant of the solar return and its ruler
  • Sun's house in Aries as the main sphere of the year
  • A planet near the Sun’s angle brings the theme to the forefront.
  • Solar return over natal chart is more important than solar return's internal aspects.

Solar and Profections

Classical tradition reads the solar chart together with profections. The annual profection indicates the house of the year and its ruler, while the solar chart shows the state in which this ruler finds itself. Together they provide a more specific result than separately.

Practical technique: find the profectional ruler of the year and check its position in the solar return chart. If it is near an angle and in dignity, the year unfolds actively and favorably in that area.

  • Profection gives the house and year ruler.
  • Solar shows this executive's status.
  • Match of two methods’ indicators increases the reliability of the conclusion.

Limitations

The Solar chart does not show what is not present in the natal chart. If a theme is not embedded in the natal chart, the annual chart will not create it; it only highlights existing elements.

Forecast based solely on a solar return is unreliable. Transits of slow planets and directions can override the annual chart, especially in years of major Saturn or Uranus shifts.

  • The Solar chart highlights existing themes rather than introducing new ones.
  • Transits of outer planets can outweigh the annual chart.
  • Accurate birth time is required, otherwise the Sun houses will be inaccurate.
