Hyleg

Hyleg is a chart point that, according to classical tradition, corresponds to life force. Candidates are determined in order: Sun in a daytime chart, Moon in a night chart, then Ascendant, Lot of Fortune, and the degree of the previous syzygy, i.e. the last New Moon or Full Moon before birth.

A candidate becomes a hylic if positioned in a suitable chart place and possesses essential dignities. Ptolemy described this procedure in Tetrabiblos, Bonatti detailed the conditions, and the calculation in the tool is based on them.

Alcocoden and Anareta

Alcocoden is the planet with the highest essential dignities above the degree of the hyleg. Tradition assigns each planet three magnitudes of years-the greatest, the middle, and the least-and the alcocoden determines which of these is used in the calculation.

Anareta is a malefic that afflicts the hyleg and traditionally signifies a threat. Together, these three elements formed the classical procedure for determining lifespan, which was used in European astrology up to the 18th century.

Why We Don’t Count Lifespan

The tool displays Hyleg, Alcocoden and Anareta as elements of classical analysis, but does not draw conclusions about lifespan. The reason is not caution: the technique itself produces a spread of decades and operates under different rules in various authors.

These figures are useful as a description of the chart's resources: where a person's source of strength lies, what supports it, and what depletes it. In this form, the classical technique remains functional and does not turn into fortune-telling about dates.

Seer and Doryphory

Classic works with two figures. Ascendant is a planet that governs the sector around the Ascendant and determines the character of its manifestation. Doryphoros is a luminary guardian, a planet that rises before the Sun or follows it and accompanies it as a retinue.

Both figures describe not a line, but a quality: through whom and in what form the power of the chart is realized. In this form, the classical scheme remains practical today, without transitioning to fatalistic conclusions.
