Composite Chart Construction

The composite chart is made up of midpoints: each planet in it is the midpoint between the same-named planets of the two charts. The composite Sun is midway between the two Suns, the Moon between the two Moons, and so on.

Such a configuration has never existed in the sky; it is a mathematical construct. Therefore, the composite describes not an event, but the connection itself as a separate entity.

  • •Planetary speeds are also averaged, so retrograde motion is interpreted differently.

Composite and Davison Chart

Two techniques are often confused. The Composite chart takes the average positions of the planets, while the Davison chart takes the average moment in time and place and calculates the actual sky for it. The results differ, sometimes significantly.

Practical rule: the composite shows a static portrait of the relationship; the Davison chart is also suitable for forecasting because it has a real date. Both can be used, but do not mix their conclusions.

House Issues in Composite

Where to place the Ascendant in the method remains unresolved. One approach takes the midpoint of the two Ascendants, another builds houses from the composite Midheaven, and a third uses the average coordinates of the location.

Different approaches assign different houses to the same planets, so conclusions based solely on the composite chart’s house placements are unreliable. Aspects between composite planets are more stable and deserve greater trust.

What to Read in Composite

Composite Sun shows what holds the connection together, Moon reflects its emotional climate, Venus and Mars define the nature of attraction. Saturn in a strong position brings longevity, but also a burden of duty.

Tense aspects in a composite are not a verdict: they describe what the couple will need to work on. A composite with no tension often indicates weak dynamics rather than an unclouded relationship.

Composite Chart

The composite does not rate compatibility in points and does not answer whether people will stay together. It describes the nature of the relationship assuming the relationship exists.

The method also has no direction: the composite does not show which of the two contributes what. A synastry is needed for this, where each planet belongs to a specific person.
