Overview

Annual Profections Structure

Profection is the uniform progression of the chart: for each year lived, the Ascendant shifts exactly one sign. In the year of birth, the 1st house is activated, in the year from the first birthday the 2nd, and so on in a circle.

Since there are twelve signs, the cycle completes every twelve years. At ages 12, 24, 36 and 48, profection returns to the 1st house, and tradition views these years as a reset of the theme.

Year's Guide

The main result of profection is not the house itself, but the planet that governs its sign. It becomes the ruler of the year, and its condition determines the nature of the period.

Three things matter: the leader's dignity in the natal chart, the house they occupy, and transits to it over the year. A strong leader in a favorable position delivers a year where this topic progresses.

Moon's Progressions

The same principle works on a smaller scale: within a year, the house changes monthly, starting from the profected house of the year. This results in twelve monthly profections.

Lunar profection narrows the forecast to a specific month. A coincidence of the lunar and annual rulers is considered a strong indicator, and notable events of the year often occur in such months.

Profections with Solar Return

The classic technique reads primary direction and solar arc together. Primary direction indicates the topic and the ruler, while solar arc shows the state of that ruler this year and which angles it is near.

If the Year Ruler in Aries is at the angle and dignified, the theme develops actively. If it is in a cadent house and debilitated, the year in this area will be quiet despite the profection itself.

Advantages and Limitations

The main advantage of profection is that it does not require the exact birth time down to the minute if the Ascendant is confidently positioned in a sign. It is sufficient to know the Ascendant sign.

The limitation is that the method is mechanical: it progresses uniformly regardless of events. Profection shows which topic is next, but does not guarantee that it will manifest noticeably.
