What the house governs

The eighth house covers resources that do not belong to a person alone: a partner's budget, loans, taxes, inheritance, other people's investments. Its second part is crises and transitions after which the previous order is not restored but replaced by a different one.

How to read it in a chart

Look at the rulers of the eighth house and the planets in it: they describe how other people's resources arrive and how a person moves through crisis. Pluto here is about the scale of change, Saturn about obligations and deadlines. Aspects show what a person does first in a crisis.

The axis of the house

The 8-2 axis is shared and mine. The eighth house lives by exchange and dependence, the second by autonomy. A strong eighth without the second gives skill with other people's resources on a weak base of one's own, a strong second without the eighth an unwillingness to enter joint obligations.

Common reading mistakes

The eighth house is read as the house of death and people stop there in fright. In practical astrology it is about transitions and shared resources, and sound astrology makes no forecasts about length of life. The second mistake is assigning all esoterica to it: worldview belongs to the ninth house.

Houses depend on the exact time of birth: an error of a quarter of an hour shifts the cusps by a few degrees, an error of two hours moves a planet into the neighbouring house. Without a birth time it is correct to read only the planets by sign.
