Lilith, also called the Black Moon, is not a body but a point: the apogee of the lunar orbit, the furthest point of the Moon's path from Earth. Astrology reads it as the shadow side, the repressed desire, the place where a person will not accept somebody else's rules. Before any of that, though, it is worth knowing there are two Liliths, and calculators quietly show different ones.
Mean and true
The lunar orbit is not stable; the Sun perturbs it constantly. So the apogee is computed in two ways.
Mean Lilith is the averaged apogee, a smooth mathematical motion. True, or osculating, Lilith is the actual position of the apogee at a given moment, wobbles included.
The difference is not cosmetic. We computed both with Swiss Ephemeris and compared them day by day from 2020 to 2030: on 35.6% of days they sit in different zodiac signs. So for more than one person in three the Lilith sign depends on which calculator they opened.
The difference in how they move is starker still.
- Mean Lilith: 151 sign ingresses over 111 years and not one of them retrograde. A sign lasts between 267 and 271 days, almost exactly nine months.
- True Lilith: 278 sign ingresses over 11 years, 132 of them retrograde. Gaps between ingresses run from 2 to 46 days.
Near a sign boundary the true Lilith can cross back and forth four or five times in two months. In 2020, for instance, it shuttled between Pisces and Aries from 1 January to 17 April, changing sign seven times.
Which one to use
Western practice defaults to the mean one almost everywhere, and it is what most calculators show without saying so. That is sensible in practice: even motion gives a stable result and does not hinge on minutes of birth.
The true one is worth checking when the mean one sits near a sign boundary. If your Lilith is in the first or last two degrees of a sign, look at both: they most likely disagree.
The 8.85-year cycle
A full orbit of the mean Lilith takes 8.85 years by our calculation. That gives a set of exact ages at which Lilith returns to its natal place:
8.9 years, 17.7, 26.6, 35.4, 44.3, 53.1, 61.9.
The Lilith return comes round more often than the Saturn return and far more often than Chiron's, so it is not a rare event. It is read as the moment a repressed theme surfaces again and demands a position.

Since a sign lasts nine months, your classmates almost certainly share your Lilith. What makes it personal is the house, not the sign.
How to read Lilith
- The house outranks the sign. It shows the area where a person will not yield and reacts most sharply to other people's rules.
- Aspects to the lights. Lilith conjunct the Sun or Moon brings the theme to the surface. Without aspects it works out of sight.
- Lilith is not a verdict. It gets described as the dark side, but in practice it is closer to the place of greatest honesty: where a person stops playing a role.
- Check both points if your Lilith sits near a sign boundary.
The house needs an exact birth time, and without one a Lilith reading is close to meaningless. You can build a chart including Lilith with a natal chart; it sits among the additional points.
