Chiron is a small body between the orbits of Saturn and Uranus, discovered in 1977. Astrology reads it as the wound that does not heal, and as the point where a person can help others precisely because they went through it themselves. But the mechanics come first, because Chiron's are unusual.
It moves unevenly
Chiron's orbit is strongly elongated: at perihelion it comes inside Saturn's orbit, at aphelion it reaches almost to Uranus. Its speed through the zodiac therefore varies severalfold. We computed how long it spends in each sign over one full orbit, from 30 January 1969 to 18 February 2019, a span of 50.05 years.

Chiron sits in Aries 4.8 times longer than in Libra. The practical consequence: there are far more people with Chiron in Aries, Pisces or Taurus than with Chiron in Libra or Scorpio. If yours is in Libra you belong to a comparatively narrow group, not because it is special but because the window was short.

If your date falls on a boundary you need an exact calculation: Chiron often crosses a sign boundary three times in a row. In 2026, for instance, it enters Taurus on 19 June, returns to Aries by retrograde motion on 18 September, and only crosses for good on 14 April 2027.
The Chiron return
A full orbit takes about 50 years, and by our calculation 50.05 years between the Aries ingresses of 1969 and 2019. The Chiron return therefore falls around a person's fiftieth birthday, and it does so for everyone alike.
The Chiron opposition, when it stands across from its natal position, is a different matter and arrives at wildly different ages. It is half an orbit, and because the speed is uneven that half takes anywhere from thirteen years to thirty-six. We computed it for several birth dates:
- Chiron in Cancer (born 1990): opposition at 12.7
- in Taurus (1980): at 17.6
- in Libra (1996): at 24.0
- in Aries (1972): at 24.3
- in Pisces (1965): at 29.4
- in Aquarius (1956): at 36.2
The logic is simple. The 180 degrees following the natal point run through the fast signs for some people and the slow ones for others. Born with Chiron in Cancer, you then cross Leo, Virgo, Libra and Scorpio, the quickest part of the orbit. Born with Chiron in Aquarius, you cross Pisces, Aries and Taurus, where Chiron sits for seven to eight years apiece.
So the familiar formula of a "Chiron crisis around 25" holds only for part of the population. For those born with Chiron in Cancer, Leo or Virgo it lands in the teenage years; for those born with Chiron in Sagittarius or Aquarius, in the middle of their thirties.
How to read Chiron in a chart
- The sign describes the character of the theme: Chiron in Aries is the right to assert yourself, in Libra it is balance inside a relationship.
- The house shows where it surfaces, and it matters more than the sign. The sign is shared with millions of your contemporaries; the house is personal.
- Aspects to the lights. Chiron conjunct the Sun or Moon pushes the theme to the foreground; without aspects it stays in the background.
Since the house matters more, an exact birth time is needed. You can build a chart including Chiron with a natal chart; it sits among the additional bodies.
